Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc.

Chapter Information

Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Incorporated was established on December 1, 1975, at Kean University in Union, New Jersey, with the principles of unity, love, and respect by seventeen universal women as the first and largest Latin sorority in the nation.

In Spring of 2006, The 22 Divas of Chaos were formed, becoming the founding line of the official Delta Theta Chapter of Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Incorporated.

Traditionally, Latina women were expected to uphold family responsibilities and conform to traditional gender roles. As Latino migration to the United States increased, more Latina women pursued higher education and sought greater involvement in social, political, and educational movements. Despite new academic opportunities, Latina students still lacked the support needed to overcome barriers in higher education. In response, 17 women came together in 1975 to create a sorority dedicated to empowering Latina women, fostering leadership, and ensuring their voices were heard within their communities and on campus. The purpose of Lambda Theta Alpha is to establish a sisterhood based on unity, love, and respect. To provide social and cultural activities and to carry out charitable and educational programs.

The Delta Theta Chapter of Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Incorporated was established at UC Santa Barbara in Spring 2006 after a group of 22 dedicated women recognized the need for an organization that would support and empower Latina students. These scholarly women, composed of different backgrounds were drawn together through one main purpose: seeking a sorority that would not only stress the fundamentals of academics, activism, social awareness, and community involvement, but also foster an eternal sisterhood. Through much researching and discussions the path became clear: Lambda Theta Alpha was the only way to fulfill this vision. For two years, they worked tirelessly to bring the sorority to campus and create a space centered on unity, love, and respect. Since its founding, Delta Theta has positively impacted the UCSB and Santa Barbara communities through outreach programs in Isla Vista, service initiatives, and advocacy efforts.
