Lambda Theta Nu Sorority, Incorporated was founded on March 11, 1986, at California State University, Chico, when 18 Founding Mothers came together to create a safe and supportive environment for women that encouraged personal growth, academic success, and service to their community. The purpose of Lambda Theta Nu is to open doors of opportunity to the Latinas of our community, with a primary focus on academic excellence and meeting the needs of Latina women in higher education. By fostering leadership, connection, and meaningful engagement on campus and in the community, the organization empowers Latinas to pursue their goals and support one another through a strong and lasting sisterhood. These values are reflected in our three pillars: Academic Excellence, Community Service, and Sisterhood.
Nu Chapter was established at UC Santa Barbara to provide a space for Latina students to build sisterhood, leadership, and academic support while serving the surrounding community. Since its establishment, Nu Chapter has continued to contribute to the UCSB community through cultural awareness, community service, academic initiatives, and programs that uplift and empower young Latinas. Through our national philanthropy, Tijeras, we work to address educational disparities and encourage educational literacy within minority and underrepresented communities. As part of this commitment, we host our annual Latina Youth Leadership Conference (LYLC), which aims to increase awareness of higher education while providing participants with opportunities to learn, grow, and develop as Latina leaders.
